Work starts on affordable development in Hylton Castle

We’re delighted to announce that work has started on our ‘Liberty Grange’ development on Cricklewood Road, Hylton Castle.

11 two and three-bedroom homes will be developed on the site, replacing flats that were demolished in the early 2000’s.

Working in partnership with our longstanding contractors ENGIE and Homes England, we’re investing £2.02 million pounds into creating high quality new homes in the area that will all be available for affordable rent.

The developments name pays homage to the city’s ship building heritage, ‘Liberty Grange’ refers to the world-famous Liberty Ship which was among the designs to be created, produced and manufactured at a shipyard at the River Wear base at North Sands.

Our spacious and modern new homes will also feature on the site for the first time, they’ve been specially created to deliver contemporary new homes that meet the needs of local people

Joanne Gordon, Development Director at Gentoo Group said: “Building much needed rented homes in Sunderland is at the forefront of our plans here at Gentoo and the delivery of these 11 homes is another vital step towards reducing the housing shortage and ensuring the city’s residents have access to truly affordable homes.”

Louise Buckton, New Build Director at ENGIE, said: “We are delighted to be supporting Gentoo in constructing high-quality, family homes, for Sunderland and giving local residents excellent options for moving up the property ladder, or downsizing into a smaller modern home.

“We are also very happy to utilise our expertise of modern house-building methods on the Austin Place development. Modular homes are quicker to construct while reaching the same high standards as a ‘traditional’ build. We’re looking forward to welcoming residents to their new homes.”

These new homes are part of our planned £117 million investment into affordable homes in Sunderland, with ambitious plans set to see 900 additional homes for affordable rent brought to the city by 2024.

We anticipate the first homes on the development will be completed early next year and will be available to rent via our allocations system HomeHunt.
