Following the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, housing associations up and down the country have been doing what they account to improve the building safety of high-rise tower blocks.

Gentoo takes the safety of its tenants and buildings extremely seriously.

In 2019, we launched the Core 364 project, which involved the removal of gas supply from 7 tower blocks in Roker and Monkwearmouth. This would significantly improve the safety of the blocks.

Gas was replaced with an open loop, ground source heat pump system. The system takes heat from an underground water source into the building to heat your home.

Heat travels around the building into your home via a new shoebox heat pump, which replaced your gas boiler. The shoebox heat pump heats the water for your radiators.

The shoebox also charges a Sunamp thermal battery. The Sunamp will store the energy to heat your hot water throughout the day.

Once the water is hot, you can heat your home by setting the temperature on your Switchee device.

If your home is too hot, we recommend you turn the temperature down using your Switchee device.

It is important you do not turn the temperature below 16 degrees.

Please ensure your backup hot water switch is only used in emergencies.

The shoebox is a more efficient and safe way of heating your home. However, it takes longer to heat up than a gas boiler would.

The system works best when it is left on all the time.

How to select a pre-set heating profile

We recommend you use the heat pump profile which is designed specifically for your tower.

Press the Switchee screen to activate the device.

Press the spanner in the top left of the screen to open the settings menu.

Press 'Programmer'.

Then 'Heating'.

Press 'More' to see the pre-set profiles for your tower.

Select a pre-set profile. We recommend you use the heat pump profile.
