Gentoo welcomes tenants to their new homes in Houghton-le-Spring

We are pleased to welcome tenants in to their new homes at our latest development Brockwell Green in Fence Houses, Houghton-le-Spring.

We have worked with local contractor Tolent and Homes England on this £5.8m development to build the vital new homes for rent.

The Brockwell Green development features 39 two and three-bedroom homes and 10 two-bedroom bungalows, each home has its own parking space.

The new homes have been let for ‘affordable rent’ to ensure they’re affordable for local residents. This means they’re available for 20% less than market value rent.

Nigel Davey and his two teenage daughters were one of the first tenants to move into the homes in September 2021. Nigel, who suffers with health conditions, was offered the larger home after he applied last Summer and now, he and his daughters have their own bedrooms.

Speaking of his new home, Mr Davey, said: “I’m over the moon with my new home and living here has really changed my family’s life.

“My health has improved massively since moving in and the house is really affordable too which is brilliant. We have lots more space to live and I feel very lucky to live in these new homes.”

Joanne Gordon, Development Director at Gentoo Group, said: “The stories of people like Mr Davey’s are exactly why we’re committed to building hundreds of these new rented homes in the coming years.

“These homes have not only transformed the area, but they have made a real marked improvement on the lives of those who have moved in. I’m delighted that as this scheme draws to a completion, we can celebrate the truly positive impact it has made on the local area.”

Chris Price, Divisional Director of Tolent, said: "It has been fantastic working with Gentoo again and supporting the fantastic work they do to rejuvenate communities around Sunderland. The homes look fantastic and provide much needed housing stock in the area.

“The site that has been developed, is immersed within an existing neighbourhood and required a high level of sensitivity to ensure the satisfaction of local residents and the new occupants. We hope the residents enjoy their new homes and look forward to working with Gentoo again in the future!”

The new homes are part of our planned £165 million investment into delivering 1200 affordable homes across Sunderland over the next five years.

Work started on the scheme in March 2020 and completed in March 2022. All the homes at Brockwell Green are expected to be fully occupied in April.
