Next stage of affordable homes contracts awarded

We've appointed three contractors to help build our new affordable homes programme.

ENGIE, Esh Construction and T. Manners and Sons have all been successful in securing contracts for our upcoming affordable housing schemes.

We have commissioned the contractors to build 58 new homes for rent across four sites in Sunderland, the exciting next stage of our multimillion-pound affordable homes plan.

We're continuing our ongoing partnership with energy and regeneration specialists ENGIE,  who have secured two new contracts in the affordable homes plan, worth almost £4 million.

The contractor will lead work on two new sites in Sunderland; building 11 new homes at Cricklewood Road in Hylton Castle and 10 modular homes at Prestbury Road in Pennywell.

In line with our commitment to the North of England, we are proud to be working with two regional contractors for the first time.

T.Manners and Sons, the North East of England’s oldest family-owned construction company, and Esh Construction, a leading construction and civil engineering contractor based in the North East, will both build new homes in Sunderland.

Esh Construction will build 24 new homes at Eastbourne Square in Carley Hill with a contract worth £3.5million, while T.Manners and Sons will lead the £2.4million regeneration of the our former Conishead Centre office in Silksworth into 13 two and three-bedroom homes for rent.

As a values-driven organisation, we have included a social value commitment in each of the contracts meaning all of the contractors are required to ensure the new developments benefit the local community.

Joanne Gordon, Development Director at Gentoo Group, said: “We are delighted to have awarded these contracts as part of our affordable homes plan, marking the next stage of our commitment to deliver high-quality, affordable homes in Sunderland.

“This investment of almost £10million is a major part of our exciting plans for affordable housing in the city, and we are looking forward to working with our contractors over the coming months to commence these schemes, while delivering economic and social value for our local communities.”

Gary Dobson, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded the contract for the Eastbourne Square development, marking the start of Esh’s relationship to deliver affordable new build homes on behalf of Gentoo Group. Through our strong regional presence and robust local supply chain, we will ensure we maximise community wealth building by employing a local workforce and procuring local supply.”

Louise Buckton, New Build Director at ENGIE, said: “We are very pleased to be continuing our long-running partnership with Gentoo. Over a number of years, we have worked together to provide high-quality housing and we are delighted to be continuing to support communities across Sunderland.

“Our modular homes project in Pennywell is another example of ENGIE working with Gentoo to use innovative building techniques to provide the best quality of living for future residents.”

Simon Manners, Managing Director at T.Manners and Sons, said: “We are delighted to have secured the contract to deliver affordable homes at Silksworth and we look forward to working with Gentoo in the coming months on this exciting new project.”

Construction work is set to commence on the site in the coming months, with the first homes expected to be available for rent in late 2021.
