Construction work begins on 24 new affordable homes in Carley Hill

A ground-breaking ceremony has marked the start on site of our exciting new development of high quality, affordable homes in Carley Hill.

The £3.5 million project, named Leeway Green, will see 24 two and three-bedroom houses and bungalows constructed at Eastbourne Square in Carley Hill to replace flats that were demolished in the late 90’s.

The development marks the first time Esh Construction will deliver new build affordable housing on our behalf.

As a nod to Sunderland’s shipbuilding heritage, our development has been named ‘Leeway Green’ in relation to a former shipyard in the city which was owned by Austin & Pickersgill Ltd.

Joanne Gordon, Development Director at Gentoo Group said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside North East based contractors such as Esh Construction to build these vital new affordable homes for Sunderland.

“This is one of six developments that are currently underway across the city and I’m certain that these contemporary and spacious new homes will have a positive impact on the local community and provide brilliant and truly affordable new homes for the city’s residents.”

Gary Dobson, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “Esh’s work on the Leeway Green development marks the first affordable new build homes we will deliver for Gentoo. As a North East based contractor, we’re delighted to be part of the affordable homes programme which is underway across Sunderland and, through our strong regional presence and robust local supply chain, we will deliver on our promise to maximise economic and social value for the local community.”

These new homes are part of our planned £117 million investment into affordable homes in Sunderland and is one of six affordable developments currently we’re currently on-site building in Sunderland.

We anticipate the first homes on the development will be completed next year and will be available to rent via our allocations system HomeHunt.
