We have been recognised in two categories at the National 24housing Awards.
Gentoo’s Business Manager for Domestic Abuse, Kelly Henderson has received the prestigious “Housing Professional of the Year” award and Gentoo has been highly praised for its innovative apprenticeship scheme.
Michelle Meldrum, Executive Director (Operations), Gentoo said: “I am delighted that Gentoo Group has received such high recognition on a national scale. In terms of domestic abuse, every year, nearly two million people in the UK experience domestic abuse which often happens at home. Kelly has carried out a vital role in shaping how Gentoo and other housing providers respond to domestic violence.
“She has gone above and beyond by actively developing a solution to a local problem in Sunderland where men could not access support to address their abusive behaviour unless they entered the criminal justice system (i.e. were arrested). Kelly has developed a Perpetrator Programme in partnership with local agencies so that men can access support to address their abusive behaviour.
“We are also thrilled to be commended for our commitment to developing local talent through our innovative and sustainable apprenticeship scheme. Since the formation of Gentoo Group in 2001, we have recruited 256 talented and enthusiastic apprentices. From the 256 apprentices we’ve recruited since 2001, 146 (57%) are still with the organisation. Of those, 22 have progressed to management and supervisory positions.
“We congratulate Kelly on her outstanding achievement and give thanks to our hard working young apprentices and our staff for this outstanding recognition and their commitment to making a difference to so many local people.”
Kelly said: “I am delighted to receive the Housing Professional of the Year award, it means so much to me. The award reflects the outstanding support and encouragement I have received from Gentoo and Domestic Abuse Housing Alliance (DAHA). I have been given such encouragement and freedom to develop my area of work at Gentoo and it is such an honour to receive this award.”
