Gentoo’s Christmas campaign has resulted in more than 2900 gifts being donated to local people in need.
Every Christmas, Gentoo run a Christmas campaign that encourages staff to donate a new or unused gift to help those less fortunate. To make this year bigger and better they teamed up with corporate partners and asked the local community to get involved. Gifts were donated by Gentoo staff, the local community and corporate partners Barclays, Berghaus, Northern Gas Networks, ASDA, Tombola and Sainsbury’s.
Often a donated present is the only gift someone receives, and this year the generosity of people was overwhelming. Donations varied from toys, toiletries, selection boxes, food items, clothing, pet treats and other unused gifts – all with the aim of giving a little happiness this Christmas.
Gentoo support a number of charities and individuals across Sunderland to help make Christmas special. Gentoo volunteers have been working hard over the past few days, sorting and delivering donations to local beneficiaries. Beneficiaries included Ashkirk Homelessness Household Project, Children’s Services, Wearside Women in Need, St Benedict’s Hospice, Sans Street Youth and Community Centre, Hope 4 Kidz, YMCA, Centrepoint, Lewis Crescent, Animal Krackers, Bede Church Homeless Group and local food banks.
Gentoo staff have also donated Christmas gifts to young people the Group supports, local people who are at risk of homelessness and Gentoo customers who are socially isolated. Donna Grieves, Support Manager at Gentoo, was overwhelmed with the donations and stressed the fact that some of the young people wouldn’t have anything to open if it wasn’t for this campaign.
A number of Gentoo staff have also volunteered their time on Christmas Day to spend with Gentoo customers who for whatever reason are unable to spend Christmas with friends or family.
Michelle Meldrum, Managing Director, Gentoo Operations said:
“At Christmas it is important to consider those less fortunate than ourselves. A big thank you to everyone who has either donated or volunteered their time to help and support others. We have been amazed at the amount of donations received from staff, the local community and our corporate partners – making this our biggest ever collection. These donations will make a huge difference to the lives of people across Wearside. Christmas is all about giving and we are so proud of people’s generosity at this time.”
Claire Phillipson, Director of Wearside Women in Need, one of the beneficiaries of said:
“Wearside Women in Need very much value our continuing working relationship with Gentoo and once again have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support offered by way of Christmas donations. With the assistance of Gentoo and out other amazing contributors we are able to ensure families with the most need across Sunderland, Washington and the Coalfields are provided gifts and food so they can enjoy Christmas."
