Flagship Chester Gate development given go ahead

The first phase of our new 500 home development situated at the gateway to Sunderland has been given the go ahead by Sunderland City Council.

The new development, named ‘Chester Gate’ after its prominent position on the edge of the city adjacent to Chester Road, will feature 118 new properties within the first phase.

Chester Gate will feature a range of property types aimed at meeting local housing need, with two, three and four bedroom properties being made available for sale. This includes a number of new bespoke house type designs, which will form a unique frontage and grand approach along Chester Road. The property mix consists of 23 two bedroom, 60 three bedroom and 35 four bedroom homes.

When complete, the development will feature a mix of both affordable homes for rent and homes for sale on the open market.

Since we began building new homes in Sunderland, we’ve invested more than £262m in providing 2168 new homes across the city, including 1589 homes for rent and 579 homes for sale. This is in addition to the £62m we’re currently investing in 417 homes that are currently under construction at various developments across the city.

Nigel Wilson, Chief Executive Officer at Gentoo Group, said:

“I’m delighted our new Chester Gate development has been given the go ahead. The redevelopment of the site compliments the ongoing transformation of the city and demonstrates Gentoo’s continued commitment to providing high quality new housing for Sunderland. We’re all extremely excited to be involved in such a flagship development and look forward to creating a highly desirable place for local people to live.”

Construction work is expected to begin at Chester Gate in the spring, with Sunderland City Council also carrying out vital improvement works to the adjacent Chester Road as part of the wider redevelopment of the area. As part of the redevelopment of the site and in the interests of public safety, the site will soon be closed off to the general public. This will include the closure of existing roads within the site, with a perimeter fence erected on the site boundary to allow construction work to be carried out safely.

Sunderland City Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration, Councillor Stuart Porthouse said:

“We will continue to work with our housing development partners across the city to provide the type of practical support and transport infrastructure needed to build new homes.

“All applications are carefully considered, and we are confident that Gentoo’s ambitious plans for Chester Gate will create the choice and quality of affordable properties and accommodation that will appeal to a wide range of people.

“We welcome Gentoo’s investment at Chester Gate and other developments across the city, and value their part in our continuing work with all our community partners to meet the long term housing needs of all who live and work in our city.”
