At Gentoo, our vision is about inspired people and strong communities. We believe that one of the things that make a community strong is an understanding that diversity is something that we should value and celebrate. We are all different, and inevitably we will hold different opinions about things that are important to us. That is fine, as long as we still treat each other with respect and don’t allow our words or behaviour to make others feel afraid or unwelcome. Events and activities that increase awareness and understanding about different groups, can help break down barriers. They help communities to become stronger and to feel more welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
As part of our support for IDAHOT, we were proud to be a sponsor at the North East LGBT Awards. Well done to all winners and nominees - there really is some great work going on around the region.
On 17th May, we supported International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. Our Chief Executive outlined some key global facts about the day to our staff. We also reinforced our zero tolerance approach to hate incidents targeted at anyone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Gentoo customers who are a victim or witness of such an incident should report it to their local Gentoo office. If you’d feel more comfortable talking about the incident to a member of our LGBT staff network group, we can arrange that. We may need to make an appointment for you, but please don’t be afraid to ask.
This year, the theme for the day was “families”, with a focus on the role of families in the well-being of their lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members, and on respect for the rights of LGBT families.
At Gentoo, we recognise that families come in lots of different shapes and sizes, and play an important part in each person’s wellbeing and resilience. We know that strong families, of all types, including the range of LGBT families, are a great foundation for building strong and inclusive communities. That is something we are passionate about, so we loved supporting IDAHOT with our rainbow flags and colourful posters promoting the range of different family groups that make up our communities.
