Inspiring school children to keep their communities clean

Gentoo has teamed up with Sun Fm and primary schools to encourage people to take care of their community through the Next Generation Project.

Ran by Sun Fm, Next Generation Projects allow school children to influence real life issues through the creation of their very own radio advert using persuasive writing and creativity. They are designed to complement a school’s curriculum and the winners get the opportunity to have their advert professionally recorded and aired over the Sun Fm network.

The Gentoo sponsored project tasked ten local schools to create a radio advert that encourages people to take pride in their community, think of ideas on how to keep local areas safe and tidy and deal with issues such as fly tipping and mass litter.

After receiving an overwhelming number of entries from schools across Sunderland, the four finalists were New Penshaw Academy, Hylton Castle Primary School, George Washington Primary School and Wessington Primary School.

George Washing Primary School were crowned overall winners of the competition for their advert which combined hard hitting facts, with a clever limerick and backing track to encourage the community to pick up litter and take area of communal areas.

The competition not only gave pupils real radio experience, but helped to build confidence, presentation skills and foster creativity.

In addition to the project, children from George Washington School also took part in a litter pick in their local area with Gentoo staff, highlighting the impact litter and fly tipping can have.

Susie Thompson, Deputy Director (Operations) said “At Gentoo we believe in inspiring people to make a difference in their community. The topic of the latest Sun Fm Next Generation project is one that was particularly relevant to Gentoo and we hope the advert will encourage the community to try and keep their estates safe and clean.

“I would like to thank all of the schools who entered the competition and pass on my congratulations to George Washington Primary School”

Julian Carter, Managing Director at Sun Fm said: ‘’As a proper local radio we are proud to help school children work on great community projects that can help improve society for the Next Generation. Thank you to Gentoo for making this happen’’

The winning radio advert will be aired on 103.4 Sun Fm for two weeks from 10th April or you can listen to it now by visiting
