Community Centre gets overhaul thanks to two local companies
Two local companies have helped out a local community centre by carrying out essential building works in a building at the Sulgrave Centre in Washington.
Tolent, based in Gateshead carried out the essential work free of charge. They were supported by staff from Gentoo Group, who donated their time and services to carry out electrical works and replace ceilings as part of their ongoing commitment to building strong communities in Sunderland.
Friends of Sulgrave is a group made up of 14 local residents. The aim of the group is to bring together the community by running a self-managed community centre in the area which acts as the hub of the community and a place that can be used by local groups and services.
Anthony Wade, General Manager of Tolent’s specialist asbestos service said “When we heard that this local community centre needed some help we didn’t hesitate to offer our asbestos removal services free of charge as well as carrying out site visits and drawing up plans for the work. As a company we are committed to making a difference to the communities we work in and like to give something back”.
Mary Jordan, Chair of Friends of Sulgrave said “We wish to express our gratitude to Tolent and Gentoo for carrying out the essential works in our community building and are so very grateful for the kindness and generosity that they have shown to us. We really do appreciate everything that they have done”.
“As a result of the work carried out we can now apply for the boiler in the Sulgrave Centre to be replaced, which will be funded by the Asda Foundation and we are eagerly awaiting news on how successful we have been”.
Lucy Malarkey, Deputy Director (Operations) said: “At Gentoo, we are passionate about building strong communities in Sunderland and the Sulgrave Community Centre does just that, by running an array of events and courses to help alleviate isolation and bring together the local community. When we heard the centre needed crucial repairs we were more than happy to assist Tolent and would like to thank them for their asbestos removal services."
