Making your improvement or adaptation
There are some things you need to be aware of before and after improving or adapting your home.
Making your improvement or adaptation
When carrying out the improvement or adaptation, you need to:
- cover all costs
- have the work carried out by a competent person in a professional manner
- have the work carried out using good quality materials
- put right any damage caused during the work to your home
- provide any certification that you need for the work, such as electrical, gas or FENSA (double glazing) certificates
- take into consideration the presence of asbestos in some materials. Find out more information on asbestos in your home
The cost of improvements or adaptations
You'll need to pay for any improvements you want to make.
Gentoo will charge you for any costs incurred during repairs and maintenance work needed as a direct result of this improvement work.
When the work is finished
You’ll be responsible for the repairs, maintenance and renewal of the improvements or adaptations you’ve made.
You’ll need permission from us if you decide to remove the improvement or adaptation. To do this, contact your Neighbourhood Team.
Improvements or adaptations made without permission
If you make alterations to your home without asking our permission you must return the property to its original condition. If you don’t, we’ll carry out the work ourselves and charge you for the cost.
