Join the citywide clean up for the Great British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean is officially underway in Sunderland, and residents are being encouraged to get involved to help keep communities clean, green, and litter-free.

Organised litter picks are taking place across Sunderland North, East, West, Coalfield and Washington, to help keep Sunderland tidy and protect the city’s environment and wildlife.

The Great British Spring Clean is organised every spring by Keep Britain Tidy, a charity which encourages cities across the country to eliminate litter, end waste and improve their local beaches, parks, and streets.  This year it is taking place from Friday 13 to Sunday 29 March.

Sunderland City Council is supporting individuals, schools, local groups, and businesses to take part in organised litter picks to help residents get involved and keep their local areas tidy.

Councillor Lindsey Leonard, Cabinet Member for Environment, Transport and Net Zero at Sunderland City Council joined the first litter pick at Barmston Washington. She said: "It's fantastic to see so many people sign up to be involved with this year's Great British Spring Clean."

“We all want to live in clean, safe, and welcoming neighbourhoods that we can be proud of. While the vast majority of residents do dispose of their litter responsibly, it’s frustrating that a small minority continue to spoil our shared spaces. That’s why these community clean-ups are so important.

“By working side by side, we’re not only tackling litter but also building stronger, more connected communities. Every bag collected makes a real difference to our environment, our wildlife, and our sense of pride in Sunderland. I’d encourage everyone to get involved, pick up a bag, and play a part in keeping our city looking its best.”

Amie West, Neighbourhood Coordinator at Gentoo said: "It’s great to see the level of interest building across Sunderland, and we’re really pleased for Gentoo to be involved in supporting this city‑wide effort. With organised litter picks planned across the city, we want residents to feel encouraged to get involved, come together and take pride in their neighbourhoods. By playing a small part, people can help keep their streets and shared spaces safe, clean and welcoming for everyone."
