This Armed Forces Day, we’re proud to highlight the difference partnership working is making for veterans across Sunderland.
Sunderland is home to one of the largest veteran communities in the country and as a city, that means making sure the right support is in place when service ends.
Over the past year, we’ve re-housed 54 veterans, helping people find safe, stable homes where they can begin to move forward.
We’re proud to be a Platinum Partner of Veterans in Crisis Sunderland (VICS) and their housing provider of choice, working closely together to make sure veterans get the help they need, when they need it.
A recent case shows what that support looks like in practice.
We recently supported an older veteran who was living with significant mobility issues, chronic pain and long-term health conditions. Over time, this led to isolation, declining mental wellbeing and a loss of independence.
Working alongside Veterans in Crisis Sunderland (VICS) and Adult Social Care, we helped them move into a more accessible home. The move meant they could live more independently, regain confidence and improve their day-to-day wellbeing.
They later described it as “a new lease of life.”
Alongside this, we continue to support wider work across the city, including partnerships with organisations like Veterans for Veterans in Care, helping to ensure veterans, particularly those in later life, feel recognised, valued and not forgotten.
Through our partnership with VICS, veterans can access tailored, ongoing support to help them get back on their feet, whether they are facing challenges or simply need guidance.
Importantly, you don’t need to be in crisis. All veterans are welcome.
If you are a veteran and are registered with a Sunderland GP, or you know someone who may need support, Veterans in Crisis Sunderland are here to help:

We’re also proud to hold the Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award, recognising our ongoing commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.
We remain committed to working alongside VICS and our partners to ensure veterans across Sunderland feel supported, valued and able to move forward because support should not end when service does.
