We are proud to have retained our Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award, reaffirming our long standing commitment to veterans, reservists and the wider Armed Forces community.
First awarded Gold in 2020, this revalidation is not a moment‑in‑time achievement. It represents five years of sustained dedication to embedding support for the Armed Forces community into our culture, policies and practices. From employing veterans and supporting reservists to championing initiatives that make a real difference.
Louise Bassett, Chief Executive Officer, said: “This achievement reflects the incredible work of our teams and partners to ensure the Armed Forces community receives the support they deserve. Retaining the Gold Award is not just about recognition, it’s about demonstrating that our commitment runs deep and is embedded in everything we do.
“We’re proud to play our part in creating opportunities and improving lives for those who have served our country, whether that’s through employment, housing or tailored support.
“Looking ahead, we’ll continue to champion best practice, share our experience with other organisations and work collaboratively to ensure the Armed Forces community feels valued and supported, now and in the future.”
We also work closely with Veterans in Crisis Sunderland and are proud to be their Platinum Partner and housing provider of choice. This partnership ensures veterans who are homeless receive the support they need to move back into housing and enjoy a better quality of life.
In the last year alone, we re‑housed 64 veterans, demonstrating our commitment to making a real difference for the Armed Forces community in Sunderland.
The Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) encourages employers to support Defence and inspire other organisations to do the same. The scheme encompasses Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards and was introduced by the Ministry of Defence to publicly recognise the support and commitment shown by UK employers.
Katie Carr, Defence Relationship Manager at the North of England Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, added: “Successfully retaining its ERS Gold Award is a fantastic achievement for Gentoo. It demonstrates not just a one‑off commitment, but a long‑term dedication to supporting the Armed Forces community, and is a testament to the organisation’s values, leadership and continued investment in people. Their support is embedded, meaningful and here to stay. A huge congratulations to everyone involved.”
The awards celebrate organisations that pledge, demonstrate or advocate support for Defence and the Armed Forces community, aligning their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.
Our pledge doesn’t stop here. We are actively engaging with contractors that aspire to achieve silver or gold status, offering guidance and sharing best practice to support them on their journey.
The next revalidation will take place in 2030, and we remain committed to driving positive change and collaboration across the housing sector and beyond.
