Work experience FAQs

Q: What is a work experience placement?  

A: A work experience placement is typically a short-term opportunity where a person (often a student, job seeker, or career-changer) spends time in a real workplace to observe, learn new skills and take part in some everyday tasks.  

Q: What will I do on my placement?  

A:  Activities on each placement will vary depending on what the department is working on at that moment in time. However, you will have the opportunity to shadow colleagues, learn about workplace expectations and assist in completing supervised tasks which are appropriate to your skills and experience.  

Q: Why is a work placement useful?  

A: A placement will help you build confidence and practical skills, provide something valuable for your CV and offers a chance to network and build connections.  

Q: Do I get paid for the placement?  

A: Work experience placements are designed to provide learning and development opportunities to grow and develop skills and are not paid roles.  

Q: How long will my placement last?  

A: Placement lengths may vary depending on availability, capacity and need. That said, placements will typically last for between 5 days and 2 weeks.  

Q: What type of work experience opportunities are available? 

A: We offer a variety of work experience opportunities across Gentoo, including:  

• Customer Support (located within our Housing teams).  
• Support Services (Contact Centre, Scheduling teams etc.) 
• Communications & Marketing  
• Heating & Plumbing  
• Joinery 

And many more.
