This is a list of changes you can make to your home that you do not need permission to do.
Things you do not need our permission to do
There are some things you do not need our permission to do. Before making these improvements or adaptations, please read our permissions statement.
These include:
- painting internal walls
- installing bathroom or kitchen tiles
- installing a glass shower screen - safety glass only, that is fit for purpose
- changing a bath panel
- installing skirting boards
- fitting of wall cladding
- installing dado/picture rails
- putting up mirrors, shelves, TV brackets, window blinds or pictures
- removing a fire surround
- painting internal doors - as long as it is not a fire door (doors must be returned to a neutral colour before leaving the property)
- painting your front door - as long as it is not a fire door
- adding door knockers or numbers using adhesive only. No screws or damage should be made to the door
- install new radiators - as long as it is suitable for the size of the room
- move radiators
- installing laminate flooring or floor tiles (permission will not be granted if you live on floor 1 or above in a flat or communal building)
- fitting carpet (you will be responsible for any alterations that are required to any internal doors following the fitting of a new carpet)
- installing a key safe - this should not be installed on properties with external wall insultation, or on a door or door frame
- install a new garden fence
- replace fence panels damaged by weather or other reasons beyond your control - the new panels should match Gentoo's fence specification. Contact us on 0191 525 5000 and select option 2 for more information
- install a small shed, playhouse or summer house
- installing a water meter - you must tell your Neighbourhood Co-ordinator if you install a water meter as this will change the rent that we charge you
- installing a smart meter - because of the location of the meter this may not be possible in high or low rise buildings
- installing CCTV or video doorbells (not in a communal block). These should be connected via WIFI and not connected to your electrics
