Services for older people

Due to dramatic demographic changes, advancement in medical technology and longer life expectancies we are witnessing an increasing number of older people. This group of people have a range of support needs required to enable their independence. We have a range of tailor-made services that help older people live well and independently.

Our Wellbeing Service enables people over 65 in Sunderland to live fuller, happier lives, ensuring those who need it have access to free support, advice and practical help. The team also provide housing-related assistance for older people who want to keep their independence, but have difficulty in maintaining a home of their own - whether the person concerned lives in specifically designed accommodation, such as sheltered housing, or the home they have been in all their life. 

Wellbeing Service

Our Wellbeing Service enables people over 65 in Sunderland to live fuller, happier lives, ensuring those who need it have access to free support, advice and practical help. From helping people feel safe or simply putting up a handrail, we can help people live the independent life they choose for longer.

Due to dramatic demographic changes, advancement in medical technology and longer life expectancies we are witnessing an increasing number of older people. This group of people have a range of support needs required to enable their independence. From aids and adaptions, financial advice to making sure their home is safe and helping those who are socially isolated, support will be given until individual needs are met.

In addition, we also provide accommodation specifically for older people. Our Sheltered Schemes provide secure accommodation and our Extra Care Schemes provide 24 hour care and support for those with a care need.

  •  Help them remain independent within their own home and community for as long as possible.
  • Delay the number of older people entering institutional care.
  • Increase the number of older people who are supported to live independently.
  • Promote healthy and active living for those leaving hospital to avoid re-admission.
  • Maximise the number of older people who are supported to participate in community activities.
  • Complete benefit checks
  • Support to participate in community activities
  • Complete assessments for minor property adaptations
  • Complete bathing assessments
  • Assess, prescribe, demonstrate and arrange for equipment and aids to be fitted.
  • Promotion of healthy and active living.
  • Mini cognitive assessments (initial dementia identification test).
  • Help with safety and security in the home. 

Anyone aged over 65 who lives in Sunderland and needs support to live independently in their own home, regardless of whether they live in a Gentoo home.

Extra Care Housing

Our purpose-built extra care schemes enable you to live in your own home with round the clock, tailored support from an on-site care team.

Our schemes consist of comfortable, self-contained apartments that have been specially designed to cater for the needs of older people. These comfortable dwellings provide secure accommodation for independent living and provide the opportunity to make new friends, if that’s what customers wish.

We also provide a number of amenities for the customers’ enjoyment. These include:

  • communal lounges for socialising
  • guest room
  • laundry
  • door-entry systems and CCTV
  • hairdressers
  • assisted bathing suite
  • bistro open 7 days per week

For our customers’ total peace of mind, each apartment is connected to a 24-hour call alarm system to ensure that there’s always someone on hand to help should you need it.

Sheltered Housing

Our purpose-built sheltered housing schemes consist of cosy, self-contained apartments that have been specially designed to cater for the needs of older people. These comfortable dwellings provide secure accommodation for independent living and provide the opportunity to make new friends, if that’s what the residents wish.

We also provide a number of amenities for the customers’ enjoyment. These include:

  • communal lounge for socialising
  • guest room
  • laundry
  • door-entry systems
  • other facilities, such as a hairdresser or assisted bathing

For our customers’ total peace of mind, each apartment is connected to a 24-hour call-alarm system. So even when the Support Co-ordinator is off duty, they know there’s always someone on hand to help should they need it. (On these occasions this facility is linked to Sunderland Telecare or cover is provided by another Support Co-ordinator.)
