At its simplest, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is all about recognising that every one of us is different, and tailoring services to respond to individual needs. Age, disability, gender identity, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation are some of the things which can mean that people have different experiences or face additional barriers and prejudice. The law calls these “protected characteristics”, and it is unlawful to treat anyone less favourably because of any of these things.
But at Gentoo, our commitment to EDI is not driven only by legal compliance. Our vision is about inspired people and strong communities, and we believe that in order to be strong, our communities and workplaces need to be inclusive. We, therefore, aim to ensure that the differences that make each of us unique are not only understood but are also valued and celebrated.
For us, EDI is about social justice, fairness, and valuing and respecting others. It’s about doing our bit to promote equality of opportunity, help eliminate discrimination, and build strong and inclusive communities. Put simply, it is about doing the right thing and making a difference so that everyone feels included and comfortable to be themselves.
